Alex and the Ironic Gentleman

Ten-year-old orphan Alex lives with her uncle. A disillusioned sixth grade student at the classy Wigpowder-Steele Academy, she is bored with her classes, her teachers and her peers. When a new school year begins and Mr. Underwood is assigned to her homeroom, Alex begins to take note of exciting possibilites for learning. He makes lessons fun — and relevant to Alex’s interest in fencing and swashbuckling activities. After all, Mr. Underwood is a descendant of a famous pirate! What could be more intriguing after years of dull classroom studies?

To add to her enthusiasm, the pirates of a ship named the Ironic Gentleman kidnap Mr. Underwood, thereby setting a course for Alex’s adventure into intrigue, fantasy, mystery and fun. The map to Underwood’s long lost family treasure is key to the kidnappers’ revenge and young Alex is determined to undertake the mission of not only rescuing her teacher but also discovering the treasure before it is unearthed by the evil pirates. Although she squirms over having to give foot rubs to sinister characters with damp, squishy, smelly feet, Alex forges ahead and with the company of Giggles her cat, her determination to conquer sets a tone of independence and self-discovery throughout adversity.

Adrienne Kress has designed an engagingly smart recipe of fantasy, adventure and ironic twists.
