Perfect Snow

In Perfect Snow, two neighbours – Scott and Jim – are ecstatic when they wake to discover the ground covered in white. At school they barely keep their minds on their work. Scott doodles snowmen and Jim dreams of creating a “totally massive, indestructible Snow Fortress of Doom.” The recess bell finally rings and both rush to the playground to begin their projects. Scott repeatedly attempts to construct the “World’s Greatest Snowman” but falls short. Jim quickly learns that building an indestructible fort has its challenges, particularly when other students raid his snow. It is only when Scott and Jim agree to work together that they achieve their goals. Their teamwork galvanizes an army of students to assist them. Much jubilation erupts when the last snowball is put into place. “The World’s Greatest Totally Massive Snowman Fort” is a masterpiece, capturing a place in school lore!

Barbara Reid knows children well. Her respect for them is always present , accompanied by a keen sense of observation and a sprinkle of humour. One can feel the unbearable excitement as the children wait for the recess bell. And when it rings.... “Kids swarmed the snow like ants on a dropped ice cream cone.” The quest to build something wonderful is masterfully described in a few brief sentences.

Reid has again touched the apex of creativity with her signature Plasticine illustrations. She also explores another medium in this publication – with ink and watercolour panels effectively interspersed throughout the story, each set of panels escalating to a scene created in Plasticine. As with all Reid’s books, photographer Ian Crysler skillfully captures the explosion of motion and colour in the artwork depicting the unbridled joy of children as they burst onto the schoolyard to begin their communion with snow. Our eyes are drawn to a myriad of snow angels, snow tasters, snow architects and snow smashers. One can practically hear the screams of delight emanating from the pages!

Description

Barbara Reid delivers her most perfect story yet!

A perfect snow has fallen, and first-grader Scott and fourth-grader Jim have been daydreaming the morning away, making plans, doodling sketches of snowmen and snow forts, all in anticipation of recess and the endless possiblities of this perfect snow.

Barbara Reid uses her signature Plasticine style and blends it for the first time with ink wash panels to create a unique mixed media masterpiece. Drawing inspiration from the schoolyard of her own Toronto childhood and the ones she visits today, she manages to create authentic images to which readers of all ages will relate.
