Acclaimed Newbery Medalist Christopher Paul Curtis's powerful companion to award-winning Elijah of Buxton is now in paperback!

Set forty years after the events of Elijah of Buxton, this companion novel is at once a hardhitting comment on the prejudices of our past and a heartbreakingly, hilarious coming-ofage novel that will have readers wiping tears of sorrow, and of laughter.

Benji and Red are two boys who haven't met yet, but their paths are soon to cross in an unforgettable way. Through their alternating perspectives, we meet the characters in their respective towns, including two different, yet equally damaged individuals: an Irish immigrant woman whose journey to Canada proves as devastating as the famine she's escaping, and a Black Canadian soldier who barely survives the American Civil War only to find he no longer fits in back home.

As the boys discover that their elders have been forever scarred by their pasts, they gain a deeper understanding of their present. With cameos from some of our favourite Buxton characters, this acclaimed novel will be loved by fans of Elijah of Buxton, while standing on its own as a beautiful comment on tolerance and acceptance.

Editorial Review

Praise for The Madman of Piney Woods:

"*Humor and tragedy are often intertwined, and readers will find themselves sobbing and chuckling, sometimes in the same scene."  -Kirkus, Starred Review "

"*.a delight, featuring the author's obvious love for his characters, his skillful use of sentiment, and his often hyperbolic humor."  -Booklist, Starred Review

"Heady stuff. Funny stuff. Smart stuff. Good stuff. Better get your hands on this stuff." -School Library Journal
